What is cooling system technology?

The dry cooling towers apply the principle of closed circulating systems. The heat that is absorbed by the liquid is transferred to a coolant or in the atmosphere. The system is referred to as dry, since water will not at any point get exposed externally and therefore minimal amounts of water are lost. An example of a heat exchanger that applies this principle is those found in automobiles.
Cool air rushes in from small tubes that contain the circulating coolant to initiate the cooling process of the liquid. The liquid in the circulating tubes then releases the heat to the cool air which results to cooling.
The average temperatures changes associated with this cooling systems is 6-8 °C. The amount of water used is negligible and most common appliances using this technology are automobile radiators and food temperature controllers
Open circulating Systems or Evaporating Cooling System
They are also referred to as wet cooling towers. They are the most commonly used technology. It applies the same operating principle as the closed circulating system. The system uses an outdoor cooling tower to release heat and allow cooling of water. The system is made up of a cooling tower, recirculating water pumps and a heat exchange.
In this type of heat, exchanger water is pumped into the system from a source such as a river or a lake that is nearby. The liquid passes through the system only once to absorb heat from the processes. On absorbing the heat, the liquid is then transferred back into its source.
The design can only be used where there are large volumes of water available. The systems are also used when process cooling is not critical or when the demand for cooling is low. The process requires a large room for the cooling system and holding water.
The designs are susceptible to significant damage in case of flooding and also environmentalist wants the process to be phased because it affects the quality of water. The average temperature change is 3 to 6 °C. An example of applications using this system is Process Water and Potable Water Systems.
