Are Stop Smoking Drugs Right For You?

Though there are a few smokers that will tell you that they have no plans to quit any time soon, most will say that they wish they could stop and perhaps they wish that they never started. Cigarettes are very addictive, and often it only takes a few to get someone hooked for life. Many who start out young spend their entire lives trying to stop. It is a frustrating and hard journey, and some find that no matter how willing they are to quit, they can not seem to do it. This is when stop smoking drugs may be just what they need to finally succeed.

It is said that it takes the average person three tries to quit smoking. These are real tries, not just passing thoughts or when someone tries to cut down. For many, they try as many as ten or more times and still can not quit. There are many methods people use and while some work for some people, there is no clear cut plan that works for everyone. Some have success with gum, and others use patches as nicotine replacement to try to quit. For those that fail with these methods, stop smoking drugs may be the answer. They can also help someone quit the very first try.

The most popular and well known of the stop smoking drugs would be Chantix. This is something that does not replace the nicotine like other methods. This is taken for a while as the person continues to smoke. The person picks a quit date, usually a few weeks away, and then plans to quit on that day. They continue to take Chantix after the quit date. For many, this has been the only thing that has helped them to kick the habit once and for all. It does not guarantee anything, but many find it to be effective and a great jump in the right direction.

Chantix is not the only choice in stop smoking drugs out there. There are some that have been used a bit longer but are not going to work for everyone. Some can take the anti-depressant Wellbutrin to help them stop smoking. This is great for people that are depressed, and some stop smoking while they are taking it. This may have led to the discovery that it could be used to help people stop smoking as well. It will not work for everyone, but in some people, it greatly reduces the urge to smoke and some people quit while taking it.

There could be other stop smoking drugs that you can try. Talk to your doctor about your options, how long you have smoked, what you have already tried, and what you are willing to do to quit. At times, a nicotine replacement is more appropriate, and for yet others, things like hypnosis can help alone or in conjunction with one of the other ways to quit will work. Whatever the case for you, the important thing is that you try, and that you keep trying until you can quit.

Starbucks Coffee Mugs now Filled with Specialty Rare Coffees

The scene is something you would see at any independent coffee bar anywhere: an assortment of people at a laid back shop in Seattle’s Capitol Hill, some sipping espressos, some beers; the delicacy counter is stocked with cheeses and pastry brought in from a bakery nearby, and a local singer songwriter has the floor as she gently coos and strums. But this isn’t just any comfortable and lived in coffee shop; it is a Coffee and Tea outlet – a Starbucks venture. People can still tell from the distinctive taste we come to expect in Starbucks coffee mugs.

Starbucks admits that the company has grown too large, too profitable, for its own good. The company has been slipping in the marketplace, and they have brought in the companies original head honcho, Howard Schultz to try to turn things around. The new direction is that Starbucks was just too happy with itself; there is no adventure, no fear of failure anymore, and consequently, no urgency or risk-taking. They are trying to new the Coffee and Tea venture, to offer something new to their customers – Starbucks coffee mugs, laid-back excitement.

The management is asking Coffee and Tea outlets to try whatever they have in mind: to break the rules. Whatever it is, it seems to be working: Starbucks is more profitable now than it was last year. Some people say that Starbucks is just trying to recapture its youth, and this kind of thing never works. There is nothing wrong with being a multinational; you don’t have to try to pretend you have your one coffee shop, and it is either sink or swim. If customers wanted that, they could just go out to a regular independent coffee house; they still exist, and they do make individual and creative beverages, unlike the experience they have, forced to grab Starbucks coffee mugs at crowded outlets and want to work each morning.

Starbucks’ CEO now has halted all expansion programs to try to concentrate on what they have already. The second thing on the list has been the menu. Starbucks, long ago, stopped making specialty coffees. They have a centralized purchase department that would buy coffee beans by the boatload. Coffee varieties that were not grown in that kind of quantity, were just not chosen. When Mr. Schultz found out that Starbucks coffee mugs were always the generic kind, and that local coffee shops did provide specialty coffees that no one could get, he put an end to the cookie-cutter approach. Starbucks will now also offer specialty coffees that are not available in large quantities.

Starbucks has also been giving thought to the way it organizes its regions across the country. Executives now, are going to be in charge of their local area, so that someone in Florida is not managing coffee shops farther north in Maryland just because they’re both at the same time zone. These two places are practically different countries, and when the management needs to be competent, they need to know local tastes and preferences. Starbucks is going big on localness now, in a really cutesy way. Their outlets now try to be environmentally responsible, by emptying the grounds from Starbucks coffee mugs into a bucket out front, so that customers can use it to fertilize their yards. If it is exam time for a college nearby, they leave a light on for you so that you can study. Things seem to be succeeding for now; and they will continue to, just as long as they can keep their mojo.

Prejudice and Discrimination Ends in America with President Obama’s Election? It Depends

A few weeks ago, Senator Harry Reid was in the news for an unflattering comment he made about how President Obama made it in politics over other African-American politicians because he was threateningly light-skinned, and used neutral language, as opposed to a quickly identifiable Negro one. This would not really be a problematic observation to make if it was said in disappointment. As it happened, Senator Reid said it was relief; relief that America’s core heritage in prejudice was safely intact even if one might be led to fear from President Obama’s successful election that America was finally done with racial prejudice and discrimination.

The Senator’s personal views betrayed by his choice of tone, as odious as they are, do basically point to an immutable truth in today’s world. It is no more sensible to deny that black political candidates find success in a way that is directly proportionate to the lightness of their blackness, than it is to deny that democracy treats candidates with success that is proportionate to the amount of wealth they invest in their candidacy. Research on prejudice and discrimination in America, over hundreds of reports, easily show that a person’s tone of skin and other signs of racial stock, end up in large part determining how easily he gets hired or fired, imprisoned or released, or, for that matter, elected or defeated. The more a person’s physical features betray his racial stock, the more he attracts discrimination.

The research in the reports shows that lighter skinned Latinos in America usually make several thousand dollars more than their darker skinned counterparts, at similar jobs. Success at standardized school tests too, usually favor the lighter skinned person of color; and the difference is as large as it is between blacks and whites. Perhaps people naturally know what color means in today’s world. Mercury-laced skin-lightening creams that give women mercury-poisoning are still well-used all over the country by darker skinned people of color. People have to do anything to gain the advantage. It is difficult to call this simple racism; it is prejudice and discrimination just against darker skin, no matter what race a person technically belongs to.

Political advertisements that feature black actors, shown at elections, usually prefer lighter skinned blacks. It has been established that viewers are influenced more readily that way. A political ad in the last presidential elections that tried to defame a specific black politician, used digital techniques to make that politician appear darker-skinned than he was. Before Mr. Obama’s election, Americans at least were fully aware of the prejudices that their society held. But now that the first black president has been elected, we have somehow managed to push out of the national dialogue any talk of prejudice and discrimination. It seems like there just is no point anymore. Perhaps that is the problem to face now.

OCD help

Obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, is a relatively newly recognized, if not all-together new, disorder that’s effecting millions of people throughout the world. As a result, it’s easier to find ocd help – be it psychotherapy, prescription drugs, support groups or holistic remedies – than it otherwise would have been ten or more years earlier. In fact, OCD help is just a google search away.

Put the phrase ocd help into the search engine and you’ll come up with a nearly endless list of sites dedicated to OCD help, starting with mentalhelp.net. Their definition of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder reads as follows:

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder where a person has recurrent and unwanted ideas or impulses (called obsessions) and an urge or compulsion to do something to relieve the discomfort caused by the obsession. The obsessive thoughts range from the idea of losing control, to themes surrounding religion or keeping things or parts of one’s body clean all the time. Compulsions are behaviors that help reduce the anxiety surrounding the obsessions. Most people (90%) who have OCD have both obsessions and compulsions. The thoughts and behaviors a person with OCD has are senseless, repetitive, distressing, and sometimes harmful, but they are also difficult to overcome.

OCD is more common than schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or panic disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Yet, it is still commonly overlooked by mental health professionals, mental health advocacy groups, and people who themselves have the problem.

Are there ways to go about battling OCD on your own? A do-it-yourself program, if you will, designed to give people who need ocd help the structure and means to fight the disorder without outside assistance? According to ocdhope.com, there are. They state six principals for self-help, and their first principal reads as follows:

YOU MUST CHOOSE WHETHER YOU WANT TO BE AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN SOCIETY OR BE ISOLATED FROM SOCIETY

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms, when allowed to run rampant in your mind, will isolate you from the world around you. To satisfy those compulsions it will require distance (first physically and subsequently mentally) from people. You must decide which way you will go: will you let OCD rule your life and cause you to give up relationships with family and friends, or will you work at making a happy, healthy and fruitful life for your family and yourself?

So in the end, it comes down to you if you’re suffering from OCD. All the ocd help you need can come from within.

Off-Road Running with New Balance Trail Shoes

I follow a pretty strict workout regimen in order to stay in shape. As part of the program, I run have to run close to 25 miles per week. That seems like a lot, but it breaks down to five miles per day for five days, with two days of rest. That’s less than 50 minutes per day, which is extremely manageable, even for a non-athlete like myself. Nevertheless, 25 miles a week is still hard on the knees, particularly when I have to run on concrete sidewalks or asphalt streets. That’s why I recently invested in a pair of New Balance trail shoes.

With New Balance trail shoes, I can comfortably go off-road and jog on softer surfaces that are easier on all my joints. New Balance trail shoes have a lot of great features that benefit runners like me, and have proven to be an excellent buy thus far. For example, I love all the lugs on the bottom of the shoe. These give me exceptional traction on dirt and grass, and allow me to go full speed without worrying about losing my footing and taking a tumble. In addition, the shoe comes with extra cushioning in all areas to absorb the numerous shocks that come about from running on trails and paths.

I also love how my New Balance trail shoes have a special “Lightning Dry” liner to help wick moisture away from my feet while I’m jogging. This not only makes me more comfortable throughout my workout, but also helps prevent blisters and other foot ailments that could knock me off my training schedule. Another terrific feature on my New Balance trail shoes is the “rock stop” guard near the toe area that protects me from getting nicked by sharp rocks or sticks while I’m off the beaten path.

I was expecting to pay quite a bit for exercise equipment of this quality, but luckily I decided to look around on the internet first. I found several sporting goods websites that offer discount New Balance trail shoes for much less than what I would have paid at a regular retailer. I just had to make sure I knew my size before placing my order (I went to a local store to try on a few pairs), and I was good to go. I ended up saving about 35 percent off the suggested retail price, and got free shipping on the deal too.

Now that I’ve been running on softer surfaces with my New Balance trail shoes for a few months, I’m really starting to notice the difference. My knees don’t ache as much, and I don’t get fatigued as quickly during my outings. I have a feeling this purchase will allow me to flourish in my training program!

Is it that Important that Big Brother Should Enforce Natural Ways to Lower Blood Pressure

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine recently somehow managed to shake up the entire country; people are suddenly talking animatedly about individual rights, Big Brother, where big government draws the line, not to mention the right to go out to a meal and be guaranteed a good full-bodied taste. The scientific study goes and says that if people could manage to season their food with less salt by even a small amount, they would reduce their risk of falling to blood pressure-induced heart disease and strokes as much as they would if they happened to give up smoking, or for that matter, a big fat paunch. As much sense as natural ways to lower blood pressure and heart disease such as these make, the general public seems to bristle at the very thought that the government might intrude so much in their lives.

The study doesn’t just mention a few vague possibilities; it makes its case with accessible statistics, and easy to grasp everyday examples. For instance, if everyone undertook to defer to a few natural ways to lower blood pressure and heart disease like bringing down their salt consumption by only a half teaspoon a day, the country would go through nearly a hundred thousand fewer heart attacks each year, and nearly that many fewer deaths from heart disease. Where does most of the salt in our diet come from? From our partiality for chips, and dip, and salt-encrusted pretzels, and a hundred other processed and packaged goodies on the supermarket shelves, of course.

The city council in New York has led the charge for Citizen health; the Council is urging restaurants and food manufacturers to bring down the quantity of salt they use in their food by a quarter over the next five years. And the food that is served at public schools and other public establishments across the state, will be given salt limits too. The independent research institution, Institute of Medicine, is preparing a salt intake recommendation that will help. What is more, the Food and Drug Administration is no longer going to list salt as food; from now on, salt will be listed as an additive. The government has tried for close to a half century to get the citizens of the country to try natural ways to lower blood pressure and heart disease, without government goading. It hasn’t worked so far; the kind of clear and ready-made information found in this latest report is likely to give the government’s plan some extra teeth.

And yet, not everyone is convinced; to call salt as dangerous as tobacco smoke, is clearly unacceptable to many physicians. In their experience, salt intake does not account for much change in a patient’s blood pressure levels; but anecdotal evidence does suggest a certain amount of definite improvement. And the great thing about picking natural ways to lower blood pressure is, that even a small beginning could potentially bring on great tangible benefits. You could never say that about tobacco, now could you?

Natural Acne Remedies

Natural acne remedies are the most advisable cure options for sensitive skin. Although there are hundreds of manufactured remedies promising alleviation of the disturbing skin conditions, it is always advisable to seek a doctor抯 advice before trying them out. Acne break-outs usually occur in the teenage years when most young people experience an increase of testosterone production in the body. Psychological disturbances, stress and irregular lifestyles are also thought to contribute to acne break-outs in adults.

Some of the natural acne remedies used to cure or alleviate the severity of acne includes Aloe Vera, Tea tree oil, vitamin A and Zinc. Tea Tree oil is a very effective acne treatment since it has bacteria-fighting properties. Bacteria are the major cause of acne outbreaks and tea tree has active properties that either weaken the bacteria or kills them.

Aloe Vera is also among the viable natural acne remedies. It contains anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory soothing properties. Aloe Vera can also be applied on the affected areas, or taken orally for detoxification of the digestive tract. This in turn helps alleviate the skin condition.

Zinc is potent natural acne remedy usually taken in capsule form. Zinc helps repair the skin and also reinforces one抯 immune system. Vitamin A on the other hand is obtained from foods but is also available in tablet form. The vitamin helps the body develop a healthy skin. Vitamin E is considered a natural anti-oxidant and hence beneficial to the skin.

Dermatologists encourage acne sufferers to drink a minimum of four pints of water daily. In addition, eating leafy vegetables and fresh fruit is also beneficial to the skin as it improves the skins ability to heal and rejuvenate itself. Some other natural acne remedies suggested by dermatologists include applying a mixture of tomato pulp, rose water and honey on the face for 20 minutes before washing it up. Tomato contains Vitamin C which is a vital vitamin in alleviating skin conditions.

Soaking 3-4 cloves of raw garlic in milk overnight (to remove the garlic smell) and applying the same on the face the next morning is also a potent natural acne remedy. This is especially effective on persistent pimples. Raw potatoes also contain potassium, phosphorous and sulphur, components which are thought to be highly beneficial to a person抯 skin. Rubbing shredded or grated potatoes on the skin cures pimples and reduces both white heads and blackheads. The juice of a green (raw) papaya also reduces the severity of the swelling brought about by pimples therefore preventing the formation of pus and marks on one抯 face.

Multiple Sclerosis Disability

Multiple sclerosis disability comprises both physical and cognitive disabilities. Physical disabilities are manifested through loss of locomotors function, muscle weakness, numbness and tingling. Speech and vision problems are also classified as disabling conditions that manifest in some MS sufferers. MS is defined as a nerve condition, whereby an individual抯 immune system eats at the protective brain cover (myelin) that protects the nerves. This hampers communication between the brain and other parts of the body. Ultimately, the condition may lead to an irreversible deterioration of the body抯 nerves and at this stage a person may loose his motor abilities or the ability to speak.

Multiple sclerosis disability is not a straight-forward disease to diagnose especially during its initial stages. This is especially so because the symptoms are inconsistent, sometimes appearing for a short time, only to disappear for a long period of time. The symptoms vary depending on the affected nerves. However, they include: * Weakness or numbness in limbs usually occurring repeatedly on one side of the body * Complete or partial loss of sight (optic neuritis). This usually occurs at different times on each eye * Blurred or double vision * Pain or acute tingling of specific parts of the body * Electric shock-like sensations, which occur when a person moves the head in specific motions * Tremor, unsteady gait and lack of the ability to coordinate one抯 body movements * Dizziness * Fatigue These symptoms usually disappear in the initial stages of the disease only to reappear later. Medics however reckon that an increase of temperature in the body triggers or worsens the severity of the MS symptoms.

Medics compare myelin with the insulation cover put on electrical wires. By MS destroying myelin, the messages transmitted from the brain to other parts of the body through the nerves are either blocked or slowed. Blockages lead to more severe disabilities.

Multiple Sclerosis disability usually occurs in people who are 20 to 40 years old. The condition is twice as prevalent in women as it is in men. More to this, genetic predisposition is also a risk factor. Statistics indicate that people with family history of the condition have an average 2 percent risk of developing the same.

Multiple sclerosis disability is also linked to the Epstein – Barr virus, which cause infectious mononucleosis. This is however yet to receive a scientific backing. People of European origin are also at a higher risk of developing MS compared to people of African, Native American or African origin. It is also thought that temperate climates place a person at an increased risk.

Morning Sickness During Pregnancy

Some women are surprised when they experience morning sickness during pregnancy for the first time. They are not surprised to have it, but they may be surprised to find that their sickness comes at every time of the day other than the morning. Others have classic cases of being sick in the morning, but they find that the duration is much longer than they thought. When dealing with morning sickness, it is important to do what you can to feel better, but you also have to think about a healthy pregnancy. Most moms and babies get through it just fine, but there are exceptions.

One surprise that some women have when it comes to morning sickness during pregnancy is that it does not have to come in the morning. In fact, for many women, the sick feeling lasts all day long. This is not just limited to the first trimester either, as some unlucky souls have morning sickness for the duration of their pregnancy. Some get sick and throw up and others never actually get sick, they just feel as if they are about to throw up all day but get no relief from the feeling. It can be hard to deal with when that happens.

For the most part, the reason for morning sickness during pregnancy is the new influx or hormones running through the woman’s body. The body is not use to these and they cause a queasy feeling that leads some women to throw up. HCG is the hormone that shows up on a pregnancy test, and is what makes most women sick. This hormone decreases as others increase, near the end of the first trimester, which leads to relief for some, but not all. The majority, however, feel better once they are in their second trimester of pregnancy.

Quite often, a very tired feeling and a missing period are the first signs a woman has that suggest she may be pregnant. Morning sickness during pregnancy comes soon after, which is usually the clue that they really need to get a test and see a doctor. Some women do not get morning sickness and breeze through pregnancy feeling pretty darn good. This does not mean that they do not have a good level of hormones, it just means they tolerate them well. Do not take a lack of morning sickness to mean there is something wrong with your baby or your pregnancy in general.

When you are dealing with morning sickness with pregnancy, there are a few things you can do. Try to have something small to eat when you first get up, before you get out of bed. That helps many women. You may have to experiment to find the right thing to eat, but try to eat something however small. Lay down when you are not feeling well, and make sure you talk to your doctor if you are not able to keep any food down and if you are losing weight. Pregnancy is one time when losing a bunch of weight is not a good idea. There are some things your doctor can recommend to take the edge off of your morning sickness during pregnancy.

Use of Military Bases

Many of us perceive military bases as the stronghold of our national security and rightfully so. Men and women who serve in our military get accommodation, training and everything else needed to make them protectors of the United States from such facilities. Unlike other parts of the country, military bases are extra-legal facilities, meaning that civil law is not applicable here. In its place is military law. Some of the names used on military bases include airbase, shipyard, garrison, barracks, armory, caserne, proving ground or dock among others. Although the term 憁ilitary base?can be used for an organized establishment housing the police, militia, constabulary or even guards in other countries, the term is used solely to refer to an establishment used by the army in the US.

Because the public is restricted from getting into military bases, those who have family members are usually very curious to know what is contained in such bases. The military bases usually have adequate housing, sanitation facilities, dining halls, hospitals churches, gyms and other recreational facilities for use by authorized military personnel and their families

Most military bases in the country provide accommodation to more than one military unit. This is in addition to being used as a proving ground, a training ground or a command center. All military bases are funded by the government and hence the huge budgets allocated for military use each year.

As command centers, military bases serve as the central place where orders are issued, intelligence analyzed and field reports issued. For this to happen effectively, the military base must be in constant touch with people on the fields. The role of such is to report what is happening to the base. Depending on the goal that was set before taking up an activity, military personnel operating from the command centers are able to analyze the progress and issue further orders when necessary. Such command centers are manned by military officers in the ranks of major to colonel.

As a training or proving ground, the military bases are used for weapon installation or reservation. Such are easily identifiable because of their names. They include the Yuma Proving ground in Arizona, Sandy Hook proving-ground in New Jersey, Jefferson Proving ground in Indiana, Pacific proving ground in Marshall Islands, Dugway Proving ground in Utah and Aberdeen proving ground in Maryland. Of these, pacific, Jefferson and Sandy Hook are no longer in active use. Outside its borders, the United States maintains more than 1,000 military bases. Of this, 200 are in Germany.
