The 5th special forces group

The United States Army has a long and distinguished history of producing top notch special forces groups, and one of the most famous – or infamous – is the 5th special forces group. Like many of their brother special forces, the 5th special forces group was formed during the Cold War. It was 1961 to be precise, and they operate out of Fort Campbell in Kentucky.

Since that was the eve of the Vietnam War, and the Vietnam war is where the 5th special forces group was initially and most famously deployed, that is the conflict that, to this day, is still most largely associated with the 5th special forces group. Despite being one of the smallest units engaged in the Vietnam conflict, The 5th Special Forces Group colors fly twenty Campaign Streamers, and its soldiers are among the Most Highly Decorated in the History of our Nation. Seventeen Medals of Honor were awarded, 8 posthumously.

Awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (Army) Vietnam 1966-1968, Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army) Vietnam 1968; Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam 1964-1969; Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal, 1st Class, Vietnam 1968-1970. Other teams and elements received unit citations, Naval Presidential Unit Citation, Valorous Unit Awards and numerous Vietnamese Unit Awards.

On 5 March 1971, the colors of the 5th Special Forces Group were returned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina by a 94-man contingent led by Col. Michael D. Healy, thereby terminating their official Vietnam service.

Currently the 5th special forces group is deployed in the middle east for the various conflicts there. They have done work such as providing security as well as harrying and capturing enemy combatants of larger strategic value. The 5th special forces group’s service in Iraq, in particular, has been noted by both President Bush and President Obama.

Perhaps their best known service in Iraq was in assisting in the capture of Saddam Hussein himself. Even though it wasn’t actually 5th special forces group soldiers who captured Hussein, it was members of the 5th who were able to secure the farm and surrounding neighborhood where he was captured by fellow green berets.

From their operational founding in 1961 until 1988 they were based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1988 they moved to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and are still based there today.

Basketball is a game played by five players aside. The only equipment needed are a basket and a ball. The 2000 election is, to this day, the most controversial presidential election in the history of the United States of America. It was contested between Al Gore, then the Vice President of the United States under sitting president William Jefferson “Bill” Clinton, and Texas governor George W. Bush.

Rounding out the iconic and impactful 70s TV shows was M*A*S*H.? Based upon the hit movie of the same name, M*A*S*H?was about a group of doctors treating the wounded during the Korean War. Most of us grew up playing one video game or another. First was Atari and Colecovision, then onto the Nintendo years, then Playstation, X-Box, PC games, and on and on. One film that did try – successfully – to capture the culture of the action arcade is called “King of Kong – A Fistful of Quarters.” It’s a documentary film from 2007 about two gamers attempting to set the high score on Donkey Kong, and it’s definitely worth watching. I know it sounds like you’d be watching two nerds playing video games, but it’s actually insanely well done and the story arc is impossible to turn away from. Definitely one of my favorite documentaries of the past few years.

The Atlantic Coast Conference is probably the most storied NCAA basketball conference in the country, and arguably the most successful. Four teams from the ACC have won the NCAA tournament – Duke, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and The University of Maryland at College Park – and several others, such as the University of Virginia, Wake Forest University and Georgia Institute of Technology have all made the Final Four. ACC basketball was where Michael Jordan, for one, cut his teeth as an undergrad. He played for the University of North Carolina for three seasons, winning the national championship as a freshman and being in consideration for NCAA player of the year as a junior. He didn’t win the award – fellow ACC basketball player Ralph Sampson of the University of Virginia did. Sampson obviously didn’t have the impact in the National Basketball Association that Jordan did, but he was arguably a better college player, leading the Cavaliers to three straight Final Four appearances and dominating in a way no big man had since Bill Walton of the University of California at Los Angeles.

The decision was made in order to expand the conference’s regional footprint, and all three programs joined the ACC at the expense of the ACC’s biggest rival – the Big East Conference. The poppy, which grows best and originates from central asia (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Krgyzistan and Uzbekistan are all massive poppy producers, as is Iran – which has the highest percentage of heroin addicts of any country in the industrialized world), is the basic component of heroin and opium and is in many ways the most dangerous starting point in the abuse of drugs. This isn’t because poppy based narcotics are inherently any more dangerous than drugs like tobacco, alcohol and marijuana, but because along with heroin comes the added risk of transmitting HIV/AIDS through the use of hypodermic needles. Even in spite of this risk, heroin has such addictive properties that addicts will ignore the potential consequences and “pop skin”, as the kids say, to get their fix.

Of course heroin abuse is well down the list in the race for most deaths caused by the abuse of drugs. Here in the Americas, far and away the greatest killers are alcohol and tobacco. The number one cause of death in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico is heart disease, which is caused and inflamed by smoking more than any other risk factor. Smoking tobacco causes fatty deposits to build up in your arteries and veins. These fatty deposits can then break off and travel down your arteries to your heart, causing a cardiac incident. Tobacco also, of course, increases your risk of suffering from stroke, diabets, arthritis and a whole host of other inflammatory diseases. Quite simply, smoking is the worst thing you can do to yourself if you want to live a long, healthy life.

Alcohol is nearly as bad. Prolonged alcohol abuse can lead to problems like high triglycerides, which itself can cause heart disease to become more acute and disabling. Then there are more direct consequences like scirossis of the liver, kidney failure, ulcers, colon cancer, acid reflux disease and a nearly endless list of other health complications. Unlike tobacco, though, alcohol can actually have beneficial effects when used in moderation. A glass of wine a day has been shown by many studies to improve blood circulation, meaning many folks with heart disease or diabetes are encouraged to indulge every now and again. The problem is when that glass of wine turns into three or four – this negates the positives and actually causes the negatives.
